WEP Nigeria new office building and halls

In a world grappling with climate change and pressing environmental challenges, where the delicate balance of nature is under threat, a group of extraordinary women emerges as catalyst for change. leading the charge towards a sustainable future.

Women Environmental Programme (WEP), a non-governmental, non-profit, non-political, non-religious and voluntary organization emerged in response to the environmental pollution in Kaduna state, Nigeria and over the years has expanded it interventions to conflict transformation environment, climate change and governance issues.

WEP has grown to be a regional organization with offices in parts of Africa; Togo, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Niger, Serra Leone with head quartered in Abuja, Nigeria.

Women Environmental Programme (WEP) as it is popularly known led by Dr Priscilla M Achakpa, as its responsibilities cut out with a clear vision of a world where the lives of women and young people around the globe are positively transformed through sustainable environmental, socio-political and economic development.

The overall goal of WEP is to promote a sustainable society while addressing the issues of gender injustice relating to environmental, economic and social rights of women, children and youth.

WEP envisions a world where the lives of women and youth around the globe are positively transformed.

To achieve this vision the organization has four thematic areas covering the environment, governance, peace and security and climate change.

In Environment, we work to ensure efficient, effective and equitable use of natural resources in other to save and sustain the environment for future generations.

In Governance, we advocate to ensure accountability, transparency, citizens’ participation, inclusivity, rule of law and due process through strategic, focused and result oriented approaches.

In Peace and Security, our interventions are aimed at bringing lasting peace and security to the communities so that sustainable development can be achieved. This is in line with the vision and mission of WEP globally.

In Climate Change, we do what we do to build the resilience of communities on climate change; and to scale up our experience and contribute to mitigation of climate change at the global level.

WEP has United Nations Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (UN) (ECOSOC) special status, Observer Status to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum, and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). With the Observer Status, WEP participate as a major group organization in contributing to the intergovernmental decision-making process in the UN-System. WEP was the Organizing Partner (OPs) of Women’s Major Groups.

WEP is also member of networks including African CSO biodiversity alliance, Habitat international coalition and the Focal Point for Global Environment Facility (GEF) CSOs in West and Central Africa.

Since 1997 WEP has impacted over 20,000,000 lives positively across the globe through her interventions.

Achieving all this is no mean accomplishment as it entails years of productive service to humanity. This has spur the organization to expand with the opening of a training center for women and girls.

 

In May 2022, WEP founder and global lead Dr Priscilla Achakpa was awarded the “Albert Balin Awards for Global Action” in recognition of her immerse contribution to women empowerment in Africa.

Created by the Hapag-Lloyd AG in 2018, The Albert Balin Awards aims to further the innovative and critical investigation of the processes and problems of globalization.

The funds from the award have been channeled into the development of a training center for women and youth and CSOs

The edifice has 11 offices, a library and three halls and it is well equipped with modern facilities to provide a conducive environment for learning and administrative work.

The training center is named “Hapag Lloyd House” in honor of the magnanimity of the funders, The Hapag-Lloyd AG Albert Ballin Award.

WEP programmes and initiatives have been strengthened by donors and partners whose support go beyond monetary, but with their time, expertise and collaborations. Through the invaluable contributions of donors and partners we have been able to make meaningful impact in the lives of countless individuals and communities.
