The Albert Ballin Awards and the Albert Ballin Forum was created by The Hapag-Lloyd AG in honour of the Hamburg native and shipping company executive Albert Ballin to mark the the centenary of his death on 9 November 2018. Albert Ballin played an important role in the globalisation process in the early part of the last century.

The 2022 Albert Ballin Forum, themed “Female Entrepreneurs in Africa: Empowering Women to make change happen” held in Hamburg on 19th May 2022. There was a discussion on the hurdles and potentials on the way to women‘s empowerment in Africa with five experts. Dr. Priscilla Achakpa presented her research with a keynote speech titled, “African Women – The Struggle for Survival and Prospects” In many parts of Africa, women still do not play an equal role in society, culture, business and politics. For development, education and equal opportunities to be effectively implemented, long-overdue decisions must be made and women in Africa must be given special support. Full equality must be prioritized as an integral part of politics and the economy, and ultimately enshrined in law.
