During the 60th session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB60) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that held in Bonn, Germany, from 3rd – 13th June 2024, Women Environmental Programme (WEP), in collaboration with Women for a Change Cameroon, and African Women’s Organization (Akina Mama Wa Africa), hosted a side event on behalf of the African Women and Gender Constituency.
The side event with the theme: Enhancing Gender Equality in Climate Action – Addressing Loss and Damage and Enhancing the Adaptive Capacity of African Women and Girls, was held in Room Bonn, at the World Conference Center, Bonn, Germany, the venue of the SB60, on Tuesday, 11th June 2024 from 10:15am to 11:30am.
The aim of the side event was to assess the outcome of COP28 on African women and girls and set a stage for ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach that prioritizes the rights of African women and girls as the world prepares towards the 29th session of the Conference of Parties (COP29) to the UNFCCC.
Speakers at the event highlighted the current climate change impacts on African women and girls and the urgency of addressing those impacts through the outcome of COP29.
The speakers also stated that African women and girls should not only be seen as victims, but also as solution providers. “While it is true we are affected, it is true we are leaders, innovators, custodian of our lands, and we shape the future of this world,” stated one of the speakers.
