WEP, FEMNET and Africa WGC Host Post-COP29 Reflection and Strategic Dialogue in Abuja
Women Environmental Programme (WEP), in collaboration with FEMNET and the Africa Women and Gender Constituency (Africa WGC), hosted a Post-COP29 Reflection and Africa WGC Strategic Dialogue in Abuja, Nigeria.
The two-day meeting, held from 27–28 March 2025 at Transcorp Hilton, brought together feminists, climate activists, colleagues, and partners from across Africa. The dialogue focused on reflecting on the outcomes of COP29, strengthening feminist climate justice advocacy, and shaping regional strategies to ensure gender-responsive climate policies ahead of SB62 and COP30.
Participants assessed the implications of COP29 outcomes on gender-responsive climate action in Africa and developed strategies to strengthen African feminist participation in regional and global climate and gender spaces. The discussions also focused on improving coordination among Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) Africa members and allies.
Some of the key outcomes of the dialogue included a strong emphasis on the need to engage key actors and negotiators at all levels to ensure that gender issues are prioritized in climate negotiations and policies. Participants also stressed the importance of collaborating with other constituencies to integrate gender perspectives into their strategies and actions.
As part of the action points, participants did a mapping of relevant stakeholders, organizations, and individuals who will be responsible for facilitating engagement with negotiators and other decision-makers. In addition, the group identified major conferences scheduled for 2025 and discussed how members of the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) Africa can coordinate effectively to ensure meaningful participation and advocacy at these events.
The event reinforced the commitment of WGC Africa members to advancing feminist climate justice and ensuring that gender remains central to climate policy discussions and decision-making processes.
