Press Update
Abuja, Nigeria.
12th August, 2020.
The Federal Executive Council of Nigeria (FEC) has approved the National Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change. The action plan was presented at the virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) that was presided by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari today. Women Environmental Programme (WEP) collaborated with the Department of Climate Change (DCC), the Federal Ministry of Environment to develop the National Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change for the Country.
The Action Plan is expected to provide guidance to the implementation of different environment and climate change actions to Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government at all levels including the private sector. This plan will be used as a tool for mainstreaming gender concerns and addressing climate change challenges in Nigeria. Priority sectors covered in the action plan include: Agriculture, Forestry & Land Use, Food Security & Health, Energy, Transportation, Waste Management, Water & Sanitation.
Nigeria is one of the few countries in Africa that has developed the gender action plan since it was first adopted by the 23rd session of the Conference of Parties (COP23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2017. This action plan will pave way for gender responsive climate change initiatives.
The development of this action plan was supported by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Both ENDS, Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).
