Women Environmental Programme (WEP) Condemns Assault and Violence Against Women at Ozoro Festival, Calls for Accountability and Stronger Protection Measures

21 March 2026 – Abuja, Nigeria

Women Environmental Programme (WEP) strongly condemns the recent incidents of assault and violence against women and girls reported during a cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State. Reports and widely circulated videos depicting women being harassed, chased, and physically attacked in public spaces are deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

WEP expresses grave concern over the blatant violation of the rights, dignity, and safety of women and girls in what should have been a safe and celebratory communal environment. Such acts represent a serious breach of fundamental human rights and underscore the persistent challenges of gender-based violence in Nigeria.

While cultural festivals are important for preserving heritage and fostering community unity, WEP emphasizes that no cultural practice or social norm should ever be used to justify, excuse, or normalize violence against women and girls. Acts of harassment and assault must be unequivocally condemned and addressed through appropriate legal and institutional mechanisms.

This incident highlights broader systemic issues, including harmful gender norms, inadequate enforcement of laws, and a culture of silence that too often allows perpetrators to act with impunity. WEP warns that failure to decisively address such incidents only reinforces environments where violence against women is tolerated.

WEP therefore calls for:

  • Immediate prosecution of perpetrators
  • Stronger security action to ensure accountability
  • Survivor-centred support services
  • Collaboration to reform harmful practices
  • Increased awareness to promote safety and gender equality

WEP also urges the Delta State Government and relevant ministries to demonstrate clear leadership by ensuring transparency in the handling of this case and reinforcing a zero-tolerance stance on all forms of gender-based violence.

As an organization committed to advancing the rights, safety, and well-being of women and vulnerable groups, WEP stands in solidarity with all affected individuals and communities. We reiterate that safeguarding women and girls must remain a priority in both policy and practice across Nigeria.
