Official Launch of the Womenpower2030 Project In Nigeria and Sierra Leone
The WOMENPOWER2030 PROJECT: Feminist Accelerate Action for Sustainable Development was officially launched in Nigeria on 13th May 2024, at the Hapag Lloyed house 5B Constitution Avenue Gaduwa Housing Estate, Abuja. In Sierra Leone, it was officially launched on the 7th of June 2024.
In Nigeria, the project was officially launched by the Director General, National Council on Climate Change, Dr Salisu Dahiru, represented by Mrs Philomena Ozeoma. At the same event, the Director General also launched the Climate Justice Advocacy Mentorship for Young African Feminist Climate Justice Activists, a programme that aims to strengthen capacities of young African feminist climate activists on advocating for accelerated implementation of gender-just climate action and sustainable development (2030 Agenda) and addressing structural barriers to gender equality.
In Sierra Leone, the project was officially launched by the Minister of Gender and Children Affairs, Dr Isata Mahoi. Dr Mahoi remarked that women have unique perspectives, skills and approaches, which are pivotal in the fight against climate change and advancing initiatives, that can promote a more sustainable future. She emphasized that women can bring diverse viewpoints to decision-making processes, leading to more comprehensive strategies for addressing environmental issues. Dr Mahoi added that, research has indicated that women leaders are more likely to prioritize climate action and sustainable practices; contributing to long-term solutions for mitigating climate change.
The official launch of the WomenPower2030 project was an avenue to provide insights into the project’s background, highlighting its mission to address inequality among women, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups, and its aim to empower feminists, civil society networks, and grassroots organizations to advocate for gender-inclusive climate action and sustainable development.
The project launch was graced by different government agencies, UN agencies, international organizations, women’s organizations, associations of persons with disabilities, civil society and the media.
