
National Dialogue and Pre-COP29 Planning Meeting in Nigeria
In partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, and ahead of the 29th session of the Conference of Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), WEP organized a National Dialogue and Pre-COP29 Planning Meeting that brought together passionate young voices. Held on the 15th of October 2024 at Destination Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria, this event had in attendance participants from women’s groups, persons with disabilities, youths, civil society organizations and relevant government agencies. The event presented a unique opportunity for young leaders and women to discuss their role in tackling climate change and shaping Nigeria’s priorities for COP29. The event was graced by key government agencies on environment such as the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment and the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Environment, House of Representatives, National Assembly, Abuja.
The event came up with a position statement directed at the Nigeria government with recommendations of what the government should do foster alliances among Nigerian climate organizations and stakeholders to ensure coordinated and effective climate action as well as ensure the meaningful participation and representation of women and youth in shaping Nigeria’s climate policies and global advocacy efforts at COP29. This meeting reached a total of 50 persons comprising 30 females and 20 males.
