Mubarak’s Transformative Journey with the Women Environmental Programme (WEP) Livelihood Mentorship.
Mubarak is a youth from Katsina State, he participated in WEP’s Mentorship and Livelihood Program and shared his story of impact.
“First and foremost, I extend my deepest gratitude to Almighty God for blessing me with this golden opportunity to be a beneficiary of WEP’s Strengthening Advocacy Against Violent Extremism (SAVE) Project in Katsina State.
Participating in the program has been nothing short of life-changing. Over six months of mentorship, guided by our esteemed instructor, Sir Abdulbasid, my outlook on life and personal development underwent a profound transformation.
Before joining this program, I navigated life without a clear sense of direction, unaware of the vital role self-esteem, self-control, and assertiveness play in shaping one’s future. I struggled with emotional regulation—when faced with provocation, I would react impulsively, often making hasty decisions out of anger. However, through insightful discussions during our mentorship sessions, I realized the dangers of making decisions in an emotional state, as such actions could lead to regrettable consequences. This newfound awareness encouraged me to cultivate self-discipline, emotional intelligence, and confidence, allowing me to approach challenges with a rational and composed mindset.
One of the most enlightening aspects of the program was gaining an understanding of the negative influences that can hinder personal growth, particularly friendships with individuals engaged in harmful behaviours such as drug abuse. Before the program, I unknowingly surrounded myself with peers whose habits were detrimental to my well-being. However, armed with the knowledge acquired from our sessions on self-worth and the significance of healthy relationships, I made a conscious decision to distance myself from toxic influences. Rather than severing ties abruptly, I took it upon myself to guide and support my friends towards making better life choices, and I am proud to say that I succeeded.
Beyond mentorship, WEP provided me with an invaluable opportunity to receive vocational training in a field of my choice. I opted for computer training; a decision that was made possible through WEP’s SAVE project. The six-month training equipped me with crucial digital skills, empowering me with the confidence and expertise needed to establish my own business.
Upon completing the training, I was granted essential equipment to launch my business. Today, I am the proud owner of Print Palace Computers, a venture that stands as a testament to the impact of WEP’s project.
Before the project, I faced significant hardships. I lacked a stable source of income and struggled to meet my basic needs, often relying on financial support from my brothers and mother—when I aspired to be their provider. Thanks to the mentorship sessions, I not only gained invaluable life skills but also acquired the technical knowledge necessary to change my circumstances.
Everything took a positive turn after becoming a WEP beneficiary. With the skills and resources acquired, I attained financial independence. Furthermore, I am now committed to giving back to my community by mentoring and training two young orphans free of charge. I am passing on the same valuable lessons I learned from Sir Abdulbasid, incorporating both mentorship and computer training through BETI ICT Solution.
This program has not only transformed my life but has also instilled in me a passion for paying it forward. My goal is to continue training and mentoring young individuals, particularly orphans, in structured batches, ensuring they acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to build a sustainable future. Before WEP, I did not have a business to call my own; today, I am an entrepreneur—thanks to WEP for support and belief in my potential.
My family, my community, and I are immensely grateful for the transformative influence of WEP. I firmly believe that initiatives like this are instrumental in empowering young people to become self-reliant and active contributors to society. Your dedication, tireless efforts, and commitment to empowering women and youth with essential skills and resources have changed countless lives, mine included. The continuity of such programs will undoubtedly reduce unemployment and foster self-sufficiency across Katsina State and Nigeria at large.
May your selfless work be rewarded with boundless success, fulfilment, and joy. May you continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration, guidance, and hope for generations to come.”
