Engr. Dr. Benedict Tertsea Shinku

Engr. Dr. Benedict Tertsea Shinku is a Mechanical Engineer and Sustainability Strategist whose work bridges technical innovation, environmental governance, and gender-responsive climate action. With more than two decades of experience across technical, regulatory compliance, and managerial roles in petroleum and non-conventional energy systems, he brings a rigorous, systems-thinking approach to WEP’s mission of empowering women and communities to lead environmental transformation.
Engr. Shinku was educated in Nigeria, France, and the United Kingdom, where he earned undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, as well as a professional certification in Maintenance Engineering from IFP School, Paris, France. His doctoral research at Brunel University London focused on energy efficiency, calibrated energy modelling, and low-carbon technologies, contributing to evidence-based insights on global energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and net-zero frameworks.
Prior to joining the WEP Board, Engr. Shinku worked across the civil service, petroleum sector, and higher education. In these roles, he led and supported initiatives on energy management and taught specialist courses in Mechanical Engineering, Sustainability, Quality Management, and Maintenance Engineering.
Engr. Shinku brings this cross-sector experience to strengthen strategic governance and organisational oversight, climate and energy policy advisory, and partnerships with private sector donors. His contributions support increased impact in the delivery of WEP’s programmes, which are reputed for being technically sound, socially inclusive, scalable across diverse communities, and reflective of evidence-based advocacy on gender and climate justice.
He is a Registered Mechanical Engineer (COREN), a Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), a Member of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, an Associate Member of the Energy Institute (UK), an Associate of CIBSE (UK), and a Member of the Green Building Council of Nigeria. He is currently a Mechanical Engineering Lecturer and Energy Consultant based in the United Kingdom.
