CALL FOR MENTORS FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE ADVOCACY MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME FOR YOUNG AFRICAN FEMINIST CLIMATE ACTIVISTS

Introduction

WEP has launched a Climate Justice Advocacy Mentorship Programme for Young African Feminist Climate Activists. The Mentorship Programme is part of the project – WomemPower2030: Feminists Accelerate Action for Sustainable Development. Funded by the European Union, and implemented by a Consortium of 5 feminist organizations (Women Engage for a Common Future, Women Environmental Programme; African Women’s Development and Communication Network; Asia Pacific Forum for Women, Law and Development;  and Fundacion Para Estudio E Investigacion de la Mujer) the project has a goal of strengthening the capacity of women’s and feminist civil society networks and organizations to fight inequalities and advance gender-equal sustainable development.

The objective of the Climate Justice Advocacy Mentorship Programme is to strengthen capacities of young African feminist climate activists on advocating for accelerated implementation of gender-just climate actions and sustainable development (2030 Agenda) and addressing structural barriers to gender inequality.

To support the realization of the objective of this programme, WEP is calling on experienced feminist climate activists, to equip the beneficiaries of this programme with the requisite knowledge and skills, provide guidance and support them to become agents of change, for gender-just climate action and sustainable development.

Roles of the Mentors

Successful Mentors will be expected to:

  1. Facilitate training sessions (virtual and in-person) on different topics relating to climate justice advocacy. In addition to facilitating sessions, utilize a range of interactive learning methodologies including group work, assignments, field visits, simulations, games, mini researches, plenary presentations, songs, art and drama (where practicable) for easy grasp and understanding of content.
  2. Develop training modules on areas of expertise assigned to such a Mentor.
  • Assess the capacity needs of participants to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses and be able to tailor customized support to individual participants who have need for such.
  1. Prepare a mentorship plan covering the 18 months of the programme.
  2. Liaise with staff of WEP for planning the schedule of the programme, development of training content and implementation of any activity related to the programme.
  3. Offer support and guidance to the beneficiaries of the programme, throughout the programme’s duration, documenting all such interactions.
  • Conduct end of mentorship assessment to ascertain learning and capacity gains of the mentees.
  • Provide lessons learnt and recommendations on best practices to strengthen capacities of young African feminist climate activists.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic qualification in the field of environmental science, social science, gender, diversity and social inclusion, international development, or any related fields.
  • Experienced in applying various training methodologies.
  • Experienced in facilitating gender and climate justice trainings.
  • Experienced in the use of virtual meeting channels.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging in the global climate change process of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
  • Experience working with non-governmental organizations, international development organizations or UN agencies.
  • Professional experience in conducting leadership and mentoring trainings/sessions.
  • Excellent facilitation skills.
  • Fluency in English, French or Arabic

Responsibility of WEP to the Mentors

  • WEP shall provide honorarium for the Mentors, to cover the data used for each virtual training they facilitate.
  • WEP shall be responsible for setting up and for the subscription to the virtual platforms that will be used for virtual trainings.
  • WEP will assign sessions to different Mentors based on their expertise and will guide them on the scope on the sessions to help the Mentors in developing training content.
  • Where Mentors are to facilitate in-person trainings organized as part of the programme, WEP shall fund all logistics related to their trips to participate in such event.

July 2024 – December 2025
