Review and Validation Workshop of the Draft Climate Change Strategic Action Plan for Local Governments in Niger State

On 20th of May 2026, stakeholders from government institutions, civil society organizations,  climate actors, community representatives, and development partners gathered in Minna, Niger State, for the Review and Validation Workshop of the Draft Climate Change Strategic Action Plan for Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Niger State.

Convened by Women Environmental Programme in collaboration with Community Development and Climate Care (CDCC), Niger State Ministry of Environment, and the Niger State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the workshop created an important platform for stakeholders to review, strengthen, and validate an inclusive and people-centred climate action framework for the state. The workshop was supported through the project, “WomenPower2030: Feminist Accelerate Action for Sustainable Development,” funded by the European Union.

The Climate Change Strategic Action Plan for Local Government Areas in Niger State (2025–2029) is aimed at strengthening climate resilience across all 25 LGAs by addressing pressing challenges including flooding, desertification, drought, deforestation, and environmental degradation. Discussions during the workshop also underscored the importance of coordinated and inclusive climate action that reflects the realities and needs of women, persons with disabilities, rural communities, and other vulnerable groups disproportionately affected by climate change.

Participants also highlighted the importance of strengthening local government capacity, promoting climate-smart solutions, improving disaster preparedness, expanding community participation, and building sustainable partnerships that support long-term climate resilience and development at the grassroots level.

As climate impacts continue to affect livelihoods, food systems, infrastructure, and economic stability, the validation process marked an important step toward building a more climate-resilient and sustainable Niger State.
